2005 Annual Parish Assembly Minutes
New Business
Askanaz Najarian got up and stated that Jefferson Street is a small street. He is asking what the feeling of the assembly is to change the name of the street to something else. Yerevan Street, Mt. Ararat Place, or Vartan Court are his suggestions.
Greg Kazarian made a motion for the Parish Council to examine the request in changing the name of Jefferson Street and to report back to the assembly within a year. Ken Nahigian suggested that the Parish Council review and explore the expense that this will incur for printing and address identification purposes.
All agreed, and the Parish Council agreed to look into the possibility of changing the name of Jefferson Street.
Bob Kalian noted that a committee should be set up to provide services for the elderly. Bob Kalian makes a recommendation to have a town meeting. It would be a time for people to be heard and ideas be exchanged.
Ara Boghigian noted that he doesn’t remember anytime that that the Parish Council deprived the Sunday school of any program or any requests that are made. The council’s responsibility is to take care of the funds os the church. He feels that people have done a disservice by wanting donated money to go to a certain fund and not donating to the church directly.
Joyce Avedisian made a motion for the parish council to appoint a committee to establish a policy in regards to in lieu of flowers and endowments. This motion was seconded by Ara Boghigian.
Peter Taraian spoke against the motion. He feels that if money is donated it is not up to the church to tell an individual where the money should be deposited.
Greg Kazarian noted that the committee would determine that. That is what the committee will be created for. A specific policy would be written so the options are clear to any individual.
An extensive discussion ensued regarding this topic and this motion.
Arthur Ventrone was recognized by the chair. He feels that it is inappropriate for the Sunday school to handle the large funds that come in. The investment committee has worked hard to make the accounts of the church to work to our advantages. The Sunday school should not be exempt from this.
Sylvia Dulgarian noted that when one is in a time of need, it is difficult to make a decision regarding this issue. When someone has suffered a loss, how is this process going to be presented to a family.
The motion came to the floor and was voted on, and the motion passed.
Vernon Samoorian stood and thanked the assembly for a very smooth meeting. He also commended the chairperson of the day. Michele did a superb and timely job with conducting this year’s meeting.
Vernon Samoorianmoved that New Business closed. Ara Boghigian seconded the motion.
At this time, Gary Nahabedian took the podium once more to announce the election results for the upcoming terms.
