http://www.college301.orgDear Friends,

Over the last few days Armenians throughout the world have been commemorating the 93rd Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Armenian newspapers and websites have been taken up with stories regarding the genocide and commemorations taking place in every land, the largest gathering, of course, being at the Genocide monument in Yerevan, known as Dzidzernagapert. One website gave visitors an opportunity to light a virtual candle in memory of the victims.

In our own state we have been greatly moved to see the Armenian flag raised in every city, town, municipality and over our State House on April 24. Many of us gathered for flag– raising programs and listened to heartfelt and passionate addresses on this occasion.

Indeed, as Armenian Americans we have a solemn obligation to pray for the 1.5 million Armenian brothers and sisters who fell victim to the Genocide and do our part so that our nation will officially recognize the Genocide as it has many other instances of man’s inhumanity towards man. It is also incumbent upon us to teach our youth about the genocide and the evil of intolerance towards anyone who is marked “different.”

This year I was particularly taken by the hospitality and expressions of care shown by non-Armenian leaders in government; for which we are most grateful. For the Genocide of 1915, the first genocide of the 20th century, is not only an Armenian issue, but is for all humanity. We can never forget. As the well known quote goes, “The one who forgets the past is doomed to repeat it.”

Today marks the 40th anniversary of St. Vartan Cathedral, which is not only a great source of pride for Armenian Americans and the fruit of the Armenian Christian creative spirit, but is also the product of the generosity of Armenians, most of whom were genocide survivors and their children.

Eternal be the blessed memory of our beloved martyrs of 1915. Today all Armenians in the state of Rhode Island are urged to participate in the Commemorative Program at the Martyrs Monument at North Burial Grounds beginning at 12:30 p.m.

+ + + + +

With prayers.
